The Beginning of an Economic Recovery<\/p><\/div>\n

The news these days seems to have a mix of highs and lows. We may hear that an economic recovery is starting, but we\u2019ve also seen some of the worst economic data in the history of our country. The challenge today is to understand exactly what\u2019s going on and what it means relative to the road ahead. We\u2019ve talked before about what experts expect in the second half of this\u00a0year<\/a>, and today that progress largely hinges upon the continued course of the virus.<\/p>\n

A recent\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0survey of economists\u00a0noted<\/a>, \u201cA strong economic recovery depends on effective and sustained containment of Covid-19.<\/em>\u201d Given the uncertainty around the virus, we can also see what economists are forecasting for GDP in the third quarter of this year\u00a0(see graph below):<\/em><\/p>\n

Overwhelmingly, economists are projecting GDP growth in the third quarter of 2020, with 5 of the 9 experts indicating over 20% growth.<\/p>\n

Lisa Shalett,\u00a0Chief Investment Officer<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0Morgan Stanley<\/em>\u00a0puts it this\u00a0way<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed, the \u2018worst ever\u2019 GDP reading could be followed by the \u2018best ever\u2019 growth in the third quarter.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As we look forward, we can expect consumer spending to improve as well. According to\u00a0Opportunity Insights<\/em>, as of August 1,\u00a0consumer spending<\/a>\u00a0was down just 7.8% as compared to January 1 of this year.<\/p>\n

An economic recovery is beginning to happen throughout the country. While there are still questions that need to be answered about the road ahead, we can expect to see improvement this quarter.<\/p>\n
