As we look back on more than a year of sheltering in our homes, having a place of our own is more important than ever. While\u00a0<a title=\"financial benefits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/04\/08\/homeownership-is-full-of-financial-benefits\/\">financial benefits<\/a>\u00a0are always a key aspect of homeownership, today, homeowners rank the nonfinancial and personal benefits with even higher value.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, two national surveys revealed the reasons homeownership is such an important part of life. The top three personal benefits of homeownership noted by respondents in\u00a0<em>Unison\u2019s<\/em>\u00a02021 report on\u00a0<a title=\"The State of the American Homeowner\" href=\"https:\/\/contentimages.o-prod.unison.com\/images\/press\/2021-Unison-SOTAH-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The State of the American Homeowner<\/a>\u00a0are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>91% \u2013 feel secure, stable, or successful owning a home<\/li>\n<li>70% \u2013 feel emotionally attached to the homes that have kept them safe over the past year<\/li>\n<li>51% \u2013 call homeownership a \u201ckey part of their life\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These sentiments were supported by the most recent\u00a0<a title=\"National Housing Survey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fanniemae.com\/media\/38891\/display\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Housing Survey<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<em>Fannie Mae<\/em>, which also shows that the top three reasons Americans value homeownership have nothing to do with money. Those surveyed were given a list of feelings and accomplishments that are associated with or impacted by where we live. They were then asked, \u201c<em>To achieve this, are you better off owning or better off renting?<\/em>\u201d Here are the top three points from the list that respondents said homeownership could help them achieve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>91% \u2013 control over what you do with your living space<\/li>\n<li>90% \u2013 a sense of privacy and security<\/li>\n<li>89% \u2013 a good place for your family to raise your children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other nonfinancial advantages of homeownership revealed by the survey include feeling engaged in a community, having flexibility in future decisions, and experiencing less stress.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Financial and nonfinancial benefits are a key component to the value of homeownership, but the nonfinancial side is most valued after a year full of pandemic-driven challenges.
