Throughout the last year, many people purchased second homes as a safe getaway from the challenges of the health crisis. With many professionals working from home and many students taking classes remotely, it made sense to see a\u00a0<a title=\"migration away\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2020\/09\/14\/two-new-surveys-indicate-urban-to-suburban-lean\/\">migration away<\/a>\u00a0from cities and into counties with more vacation destinations.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"2021 Vacation Home Counties Report\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.nar.realtor\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2021-vacation-home-counties-report-06-15-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2021 Vacation Home Counties Report<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<em>National Association of Realtors<\/em>\u00a0(NAR) shows that this increase in vacation home sales continues in 2021. The report examines sales in counties where \u201c<em>vacant seasonal, occasional, or recreational use housing account for at least 20% of the housing stock<\/em>\u201d and compares that data to the overall residential market.<\/p>\n<p>Their findings show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vacation home sales\u00a0<strong>rose by 16.4%<\/strong>\u00a0to 310,600 in 2020, outpacing the 5.6% growth in total existing-home sales.<\/li>\n<li>Vacation home sales are\u00a0<strong>up 57.2% year-over-year<\/strong>\u00a0during January-April 2021 compared to the 20% year-over-year change in total existing-home sales.<\/li>\n<li>Home prices rose more in vacation home counties \u2013 the median existing price rose by\u00a0<strong>14.2% in vacation home counties<\/strong>, compared to 10.1% in non-vacation home counties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This coincides with data released by\u00a0<em>Zelman &amp; Associates<\/em>\u00a0on the\u00a0<a title=\"increase in sales\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/06\/07\/why-you-may-want-to-cash-in-on-your-second-home\/\">increase in sales<\/a>\u00a0of second homes throughout the country last year.<\/p>\n<p>As the data above shows, there is still high demand for\u00a0<a title=\"second getaway homes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/04\/15\/why-this-is-a-great-year-to-sell-your-vacation-home\/\">second getaway homes<\/a>\u00a0in 2021 even as the pandemic winds down. While we may see a rise in second-home sellers as life returns to normal, ongoing\u00a0<a title=\"low supply and high demand\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/06\/09\/home-price-appreciation-is-as-simple-as-supply-and-demand\/\">low supply and high demand<\/a>\u00a0will continue to provide those sellers with a good return on their investment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re one of the many people who purchased a vacation home during the pandemic, you\u2019re likely wondering what this means for you. If you\u2019re considering selling that home as life returns to normal, you have options. There are still plenty of buyers in the market.
