According to the <a title=\"latest report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.attomdata.com\/news\/market-trends\/home-sales-prices\/attom-2022-rental-affordability-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latest report<\/a> from <em>ATTOM Data<\/em>, owning a home is more affordable than <a title=\"renting\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2022\/01\/04\/avoid-the-rental-trap-in-2022\">renting<\/a> in the majority of the country. The <em>2022 Rental Affordability Report<\/em> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c. . . <\/em><strong><em>Owning a median-priced home is more affordable than the average rent<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<strong>on a three-bedroom property<\/strong> in 666, or\u00a058 percent, of the 1,154 U.S. counties analyzed for the report.\u00a0That\u00a0means<strong> major home ownership expenses consume a smaller portion of average local wages than renting<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other experts in the industry offer additional perspectives on <a title=\"renting\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/11\/15\/4-things-every-renter-needs-to-consider\/\">renting<\/a> today. In the latest <a title=\"Single-Family Rent Index\" href=\"https:\/\/www.corelogic.com\/intelligence\/single-family-annual-rent-growth-hits-sixth-consecutive-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Single-Family Rent Index<\/em><\/a> from <em>CoreLogic<\/em>, single-family rent saw the fastest year-over-year growth in over 16 years when comparing data for November each year (<em>see graph below<\/em>):<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2389\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2389\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2389\" src=\"https:\/\/phphouses.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/kcm-infographic-1643633123.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phphouses.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/kcm-infographic-1643633123.png 1000w, https:\/\/phphouses.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/kcm-infographic-1643633123-300x261.png 300w, https:\/\/phphouses.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/kcm-infographic-1643633123-768x668.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rents Continue to Skyrocket<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Molly Boesel, Principal Economist at <em>CoreLogic<\/em>, stresses the importance of what the data <a title=\"shows\" href=\"https:\/\/www.corelogic.com\/intelligence\/single-family-annual-rent-growth-hits-sixth-consecutive-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shows<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<strong>Single-family rent growth hit its sixth consecutive record high<\/strong>. . . . Annual rent growth . . . was more than three times that of a year earlier. <strong>Rent growth should continue to be robust in the near term, <\/strong>especially as the labor market continues to improve.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>What Does This Mean for You? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>While it\u2019s true <a title=\"home prices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/12\/15\/what-everyone-wants-to-know-will-home-prices-decline-in-2022\/\">home prices<\/a> and <a title=\"mortgage rates\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/11\/08\/two-graphs-that-show-why-you-shouldnt-be-upset-about-3-mortgage-rates\/\">mortgage rates<\/a> are rising, so are monthly rents. As a prospective buyer, rising rates and prices shouldn\u2019t be enough to keep you on the sideline, though. As the chart above shows, rents are skyrocketing. The big difference is, when you rent, that rising cost benefits your landlord\u2019s investment strategy, but it doesn\u2019t deliver any sort of return for you.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, when you buy a home, your monthly mortgage payment serves as a form of forced savings. Over time, as you pay down your loan and as home values rise, you\u2019re building <a title=\"equity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/12\/21\/the-average-homeowner-gained-56700-in-equity-over-the-past-year\/\">equity<\/a> (and by extension, your own <a title=\"net worth\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mykcm.com\/2021\/08\/30\/the-difference-in-net-worth-between-homeowners-and-renters-is-widening\/\">net worth<\/a>).
